The Port Lincoln High School will next year be using one of the fastest growing youth communication tools - text messages - to combat truancy.

The school will adopt the messageyou text messaging program which is a system where parents or guardians are notified via a text message if their child is not at school in the morning.

For parents who do not have a mobile phone a voice message is generated.

Port Lincoln High School Principal Paul Billows said if the student was absent from school in the morning. If they have a genuine reason the school would be notified otherwise the issue can be dealt with by parents and the school.

Mr Billows said the messageyou program had reduced truancy in other schools in Australia and New Zealand.
